Speech is a physical action. The action of the muscles that shape our sounds can bring clarity and authenticity to our individual speech. This workshop offers exercises to reinforce the process of embodying speech for actors who are bilingual/multilingual. The workshop incorporates a focus on breath and articulation based on the techniques of Knight Thompson Speechwork, Fitzmaurice Voicework as well as multi-language strengthening exercises developed by Professor Santos DeCure to empower the multilingual actor’s articulatory clarity.
Cynthia Santos DeCure is a bilingual actor and voice and dialect coach. She is an Associate Professor of Acting at David Geffen School of Drama at Yale University and certified as associate teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework® and certified in Knight-Thompson Speechwork. She has taught internationally in Shanghai, Barcelona and Puerto Rico.
A native Spanish-speaker who grew up in Puerto Rico, her work and research centers on culturally inclusive pedagogies in actor training, training the bilingual actor specifically in voice and speech, including Latina/o/x/e identity, linguistic identity, and accents of Spanish.
Professor Santos DeCure’s work as a voice and dialect coach includes working at such theatres as: Yale Rep, NY Classical, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Denver Center, Hartford Stage, Theatreworks Hartford, Milwaukee Rep, RedCAT, South Coast Rep, Seattle Rep, Portland Center Stage; and the Netflix series, Orange is the New Black, The Affair as well as individual actors on stage and screen. She is an actor member of SAG-AFTRA and Actor’s Equity, a playwright, play adapter and director.
Her publications include, the award-winning, the co-edited Latinx Actor Training (Routledge), Scenes for Latinx Actors (Smith and Kraus); book chapter- “La Voz de Shakespeare” (in book Shakespeare and Latinidad by Trevor Boffone Carla Della Gatta, Oxford Press).
