Why Learn Performance in Action?

All storytelling requires high stakes - things matter most when the obstacles seem impossible to overcome. When the stakes are highest and words fail, action delivers the climax to many of our most popular stories, across both ancient and modern mythologies. From Shakespeare to the MCU and beyond, physical confrontation brings things to their epic conclusion. The skills to perform action safely, with intention, and with awareness of the audience’s experience, give those from different worlds a way to stretch their skills in new ways. Martial artists will learn performance techniques that help audiences follow the story and feel the emotional impact as well as the physical. Actors will learn how to convey intention through technique. Everyone will be pushed to expand their toolkit and dig deeper into their disciplines.

Who Can Participate?

The Schiavona is open to all levels of experience, but a reasonable level of fitness is expected, and some movement experience will be beneficial. Classes can be intense, and teachers will offer classes aimed at various levels. Accommodations will be made wherever possible. Advanced students will be able to push themselves throughout across multiple disciplines and unique approaches to the craft.
