Description

This course delves into the rich tradition of Commedia dell'Arte and clowning, two dynamic, improvisational theatrical forms that have deeply influenced European performance, modern and classical theatre, and popular culture. Students will explore the iconic characters, masks, physical comedy, and improvisational scenarios of Commedia dell'Arte, gaining a deeper understanding of the cultural and historical context that shaped this vibrant art form. Emphasis will be placed on mastering performance techniques, building grounded physical presence, and developing confidence on stage.

Through a series of exercises, games, and improvisations, students will refine their unique comic aspects, stripping away societal concepts to reveal an honest, precise performance. By the end of the course, students will have a comprehensive understanding of Commedia dell'Arte techniques, along with a stronger connection to their own physicality, greater stage presence, and an ability to authentically engage with the audience.
